Bloom's Question #1

What is the significance of the prophet being blind, and why is the motif of blindness significant?

  1. I think that the motif of blindness is significant because it plays a role in every part of this story. The whole story is based upon not necessarily being physically blind, but mentally/emotionally as well. Oedipus is blind to his past, and has no idea who his real parents are. It is ironic that the physically blind prophet knows this answer when Oedipus who can see fine does not, but it is apparent that the Prophet's surpasses Oedipus' in this situation. The entire story is based around not knowing the answer. When the blind finally can see, atleast in this story however, the results are no bueno.
